The Riddler's Revenge

(the episode that The Riddler's origin is revealed)
On a freighter, the Riddler gives a riddle to a captive man, Chuck Gorman. When Gorman can’t answer, the Riddler activates the explosives but the Batman arrives and a fight breaks out. While the Batman fights the Riddler’s thugs, the Riddler goes after Gorman but Batman stops him. The Riddler warns that this one is personal and flees into the crates, while Gorman takes the Riddler’s rod and escapes.
While Batman and the Riddler fight, Gorman activates the detonation device on the rod and the ship goes up in flames. The Batman grabs the Riddler and tosses both of them into a metal cargo crate that is blasted overboard. It sinks and the Batman is knocked out, and his Batwave activates. Dick tries to get out of cooking class when he gets the warning, but can’t get out.
The Riddler is angry that the Batman thwarted his revenge and attacks Batman despite their situation. Batman knocks him back, stopping the fight for the moment. Meanwhile, Dick eats some of his classmate’s badly prepared food, and uses the ensuing thickness to get out of class.
Trapped at the bottom of the bay and running out of air, the Riddler keeps reciting riddles, then says that both Batman and Gorman were at the beginning of his career. The Riddler reveals that he was always interested in mind-twisters despite his abusive father. The Riddler, Edward, moved from robbery to university and brain alteration processes. He was romantically interested in his lab partner Julie, and Gorman tried to convince them to work for him. Edward refused to accept Gorman’s deal and explained all the people who had thwarted his intellectual ambitions. Finally they demonstrated their invention for the University president but ended up with Gorman as an investor.

Using their brain enhancer, the president can read a science textbook in seconds and recall everything in it. But the experiment malfunctions and the president’s brain is burned out. Edward took the blame and lost Julie, but believed Gorman had sabotaged the device so he could steal the technology.
Robin searches the harbor while the Riddler relates that he broke into Gorman’s house where he created a giant maze of puzzles and traps. Gorman made a 911 call which the Batman intercepted and investigated. Gorman must solve riddles to keep himself alive. When he doesn’t get a riddle’s answer in time, the Batman intervenes just as he would be killed. The Batman must solve a riddle to stop a bomb from detonating and Gorman inadvertently accelerated the bomb. The Batman came up with the answer then made his way to confront Edward, who managed to escape.
The Riddler then took on a costume and gadgetry and let Gorman build up his riches so he could take them away from the businessman. They’re interrupted when the crate cracks open and water starts to pour in. Batman figures something is pinning them down and they must move the debris from the inside, but they’ll need to work together. Batman suggests it wasn’t Gorman that sabotaged the Riddler’s efforts, and the villain realizes Gorman wasn’t responsible. He goes to help Batman and they shift free of the debris and float to the surface. The Riddler’s thugs arrive to rescue him and he prepares to kill the Batman, but Robin interrupts and the Riddler flees.
The Riddler confronts Julie in her lab and she admits she sabotaged the project to get rid of him because he would undermine the project. The Riddler plans to attach multiple bio-sensitive disks to her head and activate them simultaneously. Before he can do it, Batman and Robin arrive and Robin takes out the thugs while Batman fights the Riddler. The Riddler grabs a laser and turns it on Julie, but the Batman deflects it with a batarang and the debris from the blast fall on the Riddler, knocking him out. Batman and Robin leave Julie for the police.

The Riddler Bio

The Riddler's criminal modus operandi is so deeply ingrained into his personality that he is virtually powerless to stop himself from acting it out. He cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand; he has to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the hero cannot solve and escape. However, unlike many of Batman's themed enemies, Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle. He often has two female assistants, named Query and Echo.

In his very first appearance, Nigma was depicted as an employee of a carnival who enjoyed cheating his customers out of their money with his bizzare puzzles and mindgames, most of which were rigged in his favor. He soon finds himself longing for greater challenges and thrills, and dons the guise of the Riddler to challenge Batman, whom he believes could possibly be a worthy adversary for him.

Some notable writers, such as Alex Ross and Shane McCarthy, have suggested that the Riddler's compulsion stems from parental abuse that he endured as a child. After scoring high on some important tests in school, his father, unable to grasp the fact that his son was brilliant, beat him out of envy. This, in theory, left him with a strong internal desire to tell the truth, and prove his innocence. This desire manifests itself in the form of his obsession with riddles.

Others, like Chuck Dixon, suggest that his madness, as well as his descent into crime in general, have roots in a yearning to rise above anonymity that he possessed as a youth. It is in Dixon's 1995 origin story for the Riddler that the famous 'puzzle contest' backstory is introduced. After a teacher announces that a contest over who can solve a puzzle the fastest will be held, a young Edward Nigma sets his sights on winning this, craving the glory and satisfaction that will come with the victory. He sneaks into the school one night, takes the puzzle out of the teacher's desk, and practices it until he is able to solve it in under a minute. As predicted, he wins the contest and is given a book about riddles as a prize. Through this book, he develops a deep fascination for brainteasers and conundrums. This may have been what fueled the fire for a few aspects of his modus operandi. After finishing school, Nigma spends a short period of time as a "productive member of society" before engaging in criminal activities. He starts off by indulging in several instances of minor and petty theft, but a longing for something bigger, and more theatrical soon surfaces.

After several failed attempts to put gangs together, Nigma, now calling himself the Riddler, encounters Batman on a rooftop during one of his robberies. Previously believing that the Dark Knight was nothing more than a mere myth, Nigma narrowly evades capture, and first encounters his future sidekicks, Query and Echo, shortly afterwards. He hires them right away, and together, the trio concoct a plan to rob one of Gotham City's biggest banks. Their next scheme centered around the "ransom" of a large number of priceless antique fiddles. During the exchange process, the owner of the fiddles turned out to be Batman in disguise. Query and Echo were apprehended immediately, and Batman tracked the Riddler down to an opera house and defeated him.

In Batman: The Long Halloween, the image of a smooth-talking egomaniac is thrown out in exchange for the embodiment of a minor supporting role, serving more as a source of information for Batman rather than an all-out serious threat. He first appears when Carmine "The Roman" Falcone hires him to figure out who the Holiday Killer is. Despite giving several reasonable theories as to who is behind the killer's identity, the Roman eventually loses his patience, and orders his daughter, Sophia, to force the Riddler to leave. Upon exiting Falcone's office, the Riddler is attacked, but for some reason left alive, by Holiday. The attack was planned to coincide with the holiday of April Fool's, and several items pertaining to it were left at the scene. He appeared again in the same chapter of the story that Harvey Dent gets disfigured in, when Batman comes to him for information about the attack.

He plays a slightly larger role in the story's sequel, Dark Victory, in which Batman turns to him to figure out the significance of the lost games of hangman that are left at the scenes of the Hangman killer's crimes. He later showed up as a member of Two-Face's jury during the Hangman's trial.

In the one-shot "Riddler and the Riddle Factory", the Riddler becomes the host of an underground gameshow that focuses on digging up dirt on celebrities. Many of the famous people that he humiliates end up committing suicide shortly afterwards, suggesting that perhaps the Riddler did more than just inspire their deaths. In the end, his actions turn out to be a front for his attempts to find the hidden treasures of "Scarface" Scarelli, a Gotham City gangster who lived long before Batman's reign of crimefighting.

In the three-part Legends of the Dark Knight storyline "The Primal Riddle", the Riddler engineers what could possibly be called one of his greatest deathtraps: Batman is thrown into a narrow pit that is slowly filling up with water. The walls are electrically wired, and a set of bumpers are the only thing that prevents the water from touching the walls and causing Batman to die by electrocution. The only options Batman appears to have are death by electrocution and death by drowning, but as always, Batman manages to tamper with the traps design and develop a route of escape.

Riddler had a working relationship with The Cluemaster, although he initially resented the villain for seemingly copying his modus operandi. In their first encounter, he set his fellow rogue up with a bomb and sent Batman off chasing riddles that would lead to its defusal, as well as away from his real plan: to steal a vast amount of priceless baseball merchandise. The two teamed up on a few occasions afterwards, and were working together on a big scheme shortly before Cluemaster's apparent death in the pages of The Suicide Squad.

He seems to be more rational and cautious than his fellow rogues. During the Batman crossover storyline No Man's Land, after Gotham City is ravaged by an earthquake and Arkham Asylum frees its inmates, Riddler elects to flee Gotham rather than stay behind in the lawless chaos that ensues.

It is during this period that he makes the poor choice of attacking Black Canary and Green Arrow in Star City, where he is easily defeated. This event helps lay the foundations for Riddler's future confrontations with Green Arrow

History and analysis
Edward Nigma discovered puzzles when he was a young boy, and he gradually incorporated them into his criminal career. Issue #2 of Justice by Alex Ross suggests that his father physically abused him, which left him with a compulsion to tell the truth (materializing through the telling of riddles), as well as a desire to prove his superiority by outwitting everyone around him.

Sometimes, he is shown to drive a "Riddlermobile," a green car with "???" on the license plate. In the animated series and in Batman Forever, he carries a trick cane.

[edit] Hush In the 12 part storyline Hush, it is revealed that Riddler had suffered from cancer, which also afflicted Dr. Thomas Elliott's mother. Riddler used one of Ra's Al Ghul's Lazarus Pits to rid himself of the disease, and offered Elliot the chance to cure his mother as well, provided he paid a large sum of money. However, Elliott was in fact eager for his mother to die in order to inherit her fortune. Elliott, who went on to secretly become the masked criminal known as Hush, explained that he would only give Riddler the money he wanted if Riddler played along with his "game" to get revenge on his childhood friend Bruce Wayne; Riddler agreed, and the two of them set Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Clayface, and Scarecrow out to destroy Batman, with Ra's and Talia Al Ghul, Lady Shiva (In Ra's's employ) and Superman (Temporarily under Ivy's control) being temporarily drawn into the scheme as well.

During the psychotic break that followed exposure to the Lazarus Pit, Riddler deduced Batman's secret identity, and that Jason Todd was once Robin. He then told Clayface to impersonate Jason in order to torment Batman, who was haunted by the former Robin's death. Batman first thought that Riddler had stolen Jason's corpse and hid it outside of Gotham Cemetery, but it turned out that Jason was alive the whole time. When Riddler threatened to reveal Batman's identity (Commenting that "Now the world is my oyster. Right, Bruce?"), however, the Caped Crusader mocked the threat as harmless, stating it was like the old joke about "What time is it when an elephant sits on your fence"; if Riddler revealed the answer to the riddle "who is Batman?", it would become worthless, something Riddler wouldn't be able to stand. Riddler hadn't even told Clayface Batman's true identity when he was posing as Jason, the one thing that would have made the impersonation perfect, and had only told Hush because he had to. In addition, Batman warned the Riddler that if he revealed the secret, it would give Ra's al Ghul a vital clue that he used a Lazarus Pit without his permission, and the League of Assassins would subsequently retaliate against him.

[edit] Aftermath The fallout from Riddler's failed scheme would be played out in Batman: Gotham Knights #50-53. In the story "Pushback," Hush reappears and beats Riddler senseless across a rooftop. Seeking refuge, Riddler would go to the Joker and the Penguin. He would offer to tell the Joker who had killed his wife if the Clown Prince of Crime would protect him from Hush. The Joker agrees, but eventually Hush, with the help of Prometheus, defeats Mr. J, forcing the Riddler to flee for his life.

In Detective Comics #797-799 the Riddler faces a great humiliation at the hands of Poison Ivy in the storyline entitled "Low", which took place the same time as "War Games" In this encounter, the Riddler would seek shelter from Ivy only to be humiliated. Riddler and Ivy then faced off in a physical duel, which Ivy won easily.

Riddler was stripped of his deductive powers and left to rot as a member of Gotham City's vast and invisible homeless population. A chance encounter with an ex-NSA codebreaker gave him a positive environment in which to recover his mind. During that stay, he experienced an induced flashback that led him to realize that his father had abused him many years ago. His father, unable to grasp that his son was brilliant, believed he had cheated in his accomplishments, and beat him out of jealousy. Once Riddler discovered this, he also realized that his compulsion was born out of a strong desire to tell the truth to prove his innocence of deception.

Having made this connection, the Riddler spent some of his vast fortune, acquired over many years of crime, to get minor plastic surgery and extensive tattooing, covering most of his torso with his trademark question insignia. He returned and killed the codebreaker- who had pieced together his identity but couldn't act on it- then promptly stole a priceless scroll out from under Batman's nose. Since then, the Riddler has spent most of his time either legally amassing a huge fortune or attacking various heroes in order to prove his newfound power. He has apparently lost the desire to plant riddles or clues at his various crime scenes, although he still enjoys riddles in an abstract sense, and will occasionally make subtle references to them in the course of his crimes. After attacking and nearly killing Green Arrow and Arsenal, Riddler once again escaped before the Outsiders arrived to save them.

Riddler later showed up in Infinite Crisis #1, with a group of villains attacking the Gotham City Police Department while the city dealt with the chaos resulting from the finale of Day of Vengeance. He was back in his green suit and talking in riddles, although he was next seen escaping Arkham Asylum during the world-wide supervillain breakout the Society engineered in Villains United: Infinite Crisis Special #1, which took place only days after the prior supernatural disaster. Riddler re-appeared as part of the Society's "Phase Three" attack on Metropolis. He was roundly defeated by the Shining Knight.

The Riddler has a counterpart in the anti-matter universe called the Quizmaster, who is a member of Lex Luthor's Justice Underground.

In Detective Comics #822, The Riddler returns, having spent much of the previous year in a coma due to the one-sided fight against the Knight. He has seemingly reformed, and is now a private consultant on the murder of a wealthy socialite. Hired by the socialite's father, he successfully - with great flamboyance and in front of the media - proves that a photo of Bruce Wayne apparently implicating him in the crime depicts an imposter, and briefly works with Batman to investigate the crime. As a result of his coma, The Riddler has apparently lost his compulsion for riddles, but retains both his intellect and his mammoth ego. Furthermore, he suffered severe memory loss; upon emerging from his coma, he barely remembers his own name. He does not appear to remember that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same, though he does harbor some suspicions of once knowing something about Bruce Wayne.

The Riddler appeared to solve the case with the suicide of the apparent murderer, and quickly took the credit. However, Batman found evidence that the suicide was a setup to divert attention away from the real killer. Eventually, he loses interest in crimefighting — he finds his cases irritatingly simple — and may return to crime.

In Detective Comics #828, Riddler is a guest along with Bruce Wayne on board a ship during a party. During the party, an old friend of Bruce's falls overboard and is mauled to death by sharks. Bruce suspects foul play, and eventually tracks down the killer, who Riddler was also close to catching, before Nigma was bludgeoned over the head by a shark-tooth club. The killer pushes Batman out the window, and is about to drop him to his death, when Nigma wraps his tie around an arrow, lights it on fire, and shoots it into the killer's back. As the man rolls around screaming, Nigma taunts him, refusing to douse the flames. Batman extinguishes the flame, and responds to Nigma's assertion that they're now allies with hostile dismissal. Nigma also asks Batman if the shark mauling victim was someone he knew. Batman denies it and leaves.

The blow Riddler receives to his head, followed by his subsequent questioning of Batman's relationship with the deceased has led some to speculate that he may be regaining his memories.

The Riddler Bio

(According to comicvine.com)
Origin The Riddler, one of Batman's insane foes that haunt Gotham City, is unique in his pursuit of individuality. Riddler's focus lays not with fear, nor duality, nor plants, nor immortality. Riddler is obssessed with mind games, and with the propensity of the human brain.

Riddles, word games, clues, puzzles. It's not merely an obsession, it's a compulsion. He commits elaborate, brilliant crimes-and leaves a complex riddle. Riddler has fought his compulsions set in from childhood (the result of an abusive father and absent mother), but his failed attempts to abandon his need to tell the truth culminated in a most vulnerable, deep realization: "You don't understand... I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I... I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I... I might actually be crazy." This is classic Riddler, right there, and when you get inside, he's a tragic villain.

Edward Nigma has harbored a passion for puzzles since his youth. His movements to the wayward vocation of a criminal began innocently enough; his father, unable to accept (or comprehend) the profound intellect of his child, frequently beat Edward in frustration. Taught to believe that he was "worthless" and a "liar", young Edward sought to overcome his inferiority complex by proving his intelligence--even if he had to do so through cheating. His first criminal act, something as small as cheating on an elementary school puzzle competition, initiated Edward into the dark spiral and exhilaration of crime. He would eventually fashion his alias, the Riddler, after his sincere passion for thought.

Hush Riddler played a tremendously vital part in the "Hush" crisis. Riddler, aware that he was dying of cancer, cleverly and secretly found one of Ra's Al Ghul's Lazarus Pits and used it unbeknownst to its owner, curing himself of the fatal affliction. Doctor Tommy Elliot (whose vengeance and greed would later transform into the criminal Hush) happened upon Riddler as the latter was suffering through brain cancer (Edward was, at the time, using the name Arthur Wynne--a tribute to the inventor of the crossword puzzle). Upon approaching Riddler about the villain's miraculous recovery from cancer, Riddler offered the location of a Lazarus Pit to heal Tommy's wealthy and dying mother--for a price, naturally. However, Tommy had other things in mind...one of which was securing his dying mother's fortune before he wrought his revenge on Bruce Wayne. Guided by Riddler's complex plan, he and Hush manipulated a variety of Batman's rogues to destroy Batman, piece by piece. Riddler played Joker, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Ra's al Ghul, Lady Shiva, and Talia al Ghul like pawns--a brilliant set of moves that would eventually earn him brutal penance from an unhappy lot of Arkham frequents. Additionally, the clarity of mind that Riddler regained after his recovery resulted in him solving the greatest riddler of his lifetime: that Bruce Wayne is Batman. He used this information to hurt Batman with emotional agony; namely, using the memory of the deceased Jason Todd, Batman's first dead Robin. Upon Riddler's insistence, Clayface impersonated Todd to make this horrifying memory a reality again. Eventually Batman caught up to Riddler's plot and parried wits with the rogue who knew his identity, ensuring Riddler's silence--after all, what worth is a riddler whose answer everyone knows?

Later, Hush reappeared and beat Riddler senseless. Riddler sought refuge with the Joker, which did not work out, and then Poison Ivy, who expressed her discontent about his earlier manipulation in a very harmful, humiliating way. Spiraling into a depth of doubt and darker insanity, Edward lived among the homeless until an ex-NASA decoder discovered him, and helped him recover his wits and self. He had trouble with Green Arrow, Arsenal and the Outsiders. During Infinite Crisis Eddie  is struck in the head by Shining Knight's mace which results him falling into a coma. Eddie came out of his come one year later. Riddler overcame his riddles but not his ego problem. Riddler reclaimed his life in a new hue; now, amassing a fortune legally as a private detective, Edward is on the right side of the law....even if his is yearning for that insatiable thrill his intellect demands..... recently eddie has been hired by Nightwing to investigate the museum robberies.

The Riddler Bio (and other info)

(According to DC wikipedia)
History
Edward was born into a broken home, his mother was absent and his father was abusive. When Edward was a young boy he became excited at the idea of winning a puzzle contest at school. To increase his likelihood of winning Edward sneaks into school during the night and practices the puzzle until he can solve it with ease. He ends up winning and is awarded a riddle book. Since that time he has mastered puzzles, mindgames and riddles. Edward was profoundly intelligent and would pass tests with apparent ease, something his father out of jealousy couldn't or wouldn't believe, and therefore attributed his success to cheating (supposedly catching him once) and beat him repeatedly so he'll not lie and stay out of trouble. Out of the abuse Edward developed a compulsion he has became known for, he constantly endeavors to tell the truth to prove his innocence. This is where his obsession with riddles comes from. Unfortunately the abuse is also a main factor that drove him to a life of crime.[1]

The Riddler When Edward got older he left home and became a carnival performer, using his skills to cheat carnival goers out of their money. But this was not enough for him he longed for something more, and becomes the Riddler and pics The Batman, as a adversary, as he believes him to be intelligent and more then worthy opponent.

Starting out as a simple informant and criminal profiler for the underworld of Gotham City as well as for Batman. The Riddler slowly became more of a villain to Batman. It wasn't long before he became a main adversary to the Caped Crusader constantly testing his analytical abilities to the limits.

Big Gambit
The Riddler was eventually diagnosed with caner, being the clever man that he was he found one of the secret Lazarus Pit's of fellow Batman villain Ra's al Ghul, where he cures himself of his fatal disease. It was during the time he was suffering with brain cancer, under the alias Arthur Wynne, that he came across Dr. Thomas Elliott who would one day become the criminal Hush. When Dr. Elliott saw how he had made the fast recovery, Riddler offered the knowledge to Elliott for a price, if he wanted to save his dying mother. Elliot preferred not to take the Riddler up in his offer so that he can gain his mothers money upon her death. The Riddler and Elliott decided to destroy Batman, Riddler developed a complex plan involving the manipulation of many of Batman's rogues such as: Joker, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Ra's al Ghul, Lady Shiva, and Talia al Ghul. He even involved Superman in the scheme. The Gambit was as dangerous for Batman as it was for the Riddler, but on the plus side it allowed him to solve the greatest riddle of all: that Bruce Wayne is Batman. With the Information he tortured Batman with the memory of Jason Todd, the second Robin. He had Clayface take the form of Jason and torment Batman in reality. Later Jason's body was found stolen from his grave, Batman was sure it was the Riddler. Only to find that Jason was alive the entire time.

When Batman found out Riddler's plot and realizing he knew his secret identity, the only way to ensure Riddler's silence was to match wits with him. He explained that Riddler could never tell anyone he was Bruce Wayne to do so go against everything the Riddler stood for, The Ridder couldn't except that. Batman also threatened that to do so would reveal that the Riddler knew where Ra's al Ghul's Lazarus Pit's where and he would meet an end at the hands of the League of Assassins.

Downfall & New Start
Later, Elliott reappeared and brutally beat the Riddler. Seeking refuge the Riddler went to the Joker and the Penguin. He tries to bargain with the Joker for asylum and he agrees but eventually his safety is compromised and he is forced to go on the run again. He asks Poison Ivy for asylum both of whom remembered his manipulation and the meeting didn't go well. At a lose the Riddler went into a downward spiral of insanity and became homeless. He eventually was found by a ex-NASA decoder who helped him recover his mind. It is during this time that the Riddler has an induced flashback about his childhood, he comes to the realization of what happened when he was abused and why. He also deduces the reason behind why he has the compulsion he has for riddles.

Using his vast fortune, acquired over many years of crime, he gets minor plastic surgery and extensive tattooing. He covers the majority of his torso with his trademark question mark insignia. He kills the Codebreaker, who has discovered his secret identity and steals a priceless scroll, before Batman can get to it. It was at this time that Riddler starting amassing a huge fortune legally and attacking various heroes to prove his abilities.

During this time he had a run in with Green Arrow, Arsenal and the Outsiders. The Riddler is up for revenge against his defeat by the Green Arrow and he brutally injures and almost kills the the two archers. If not for the timely arrival of the Outsiders they may have been killed. Before these the Riddler was hired to steal artifacts imbued with mystical powers from one of Star City's museums, and then distract the authorities so that the related rituals could be commenced. He sends Team Arrow on a wild goose chase around the City, and then reveals that he has an atomic bomb housed in the stadium where the Star City Rockets play. However, as a side effect of the ritual performed with the artifacts, the city is plunged into complete darkness, and Green Arrow uses this to his advantage, to capture the Riddler.

Infinite Crisis
The Riddler was with a group of villains attacking the Gotham City Police Department. He later escaped from Arkham Asylum after a worldwide breakout by the Secret Society of Super Villains. He then is along with the Society when they attack Metropolis. He is defeated by the Shining Knight and is struck in the head by the Knight's mace.

One Year Later
The Riddler was sent into a coma when he was hit in the head by the Shining Knight's mace. When the Riddler awoke a year later, without his obsessive compulsive fixation for riddles but still possesses his great intellect and enormous ego. He also suffers from memory loss forgetting his own name for a while and not remembering that Bruce Wayne is Batman, but he is suspicious. He was reformed and then became a private investigator at which he legally develops even more of a fortune. He was finally on the right side of the law using his great talents for the good of the people.

He even becomes involved in a ship bound murder mystery alongside Batman, while deducing a part of the mystery, Batman deduces the real reason. In the end they both did there part in solving the crime and have become hostile allies. He is then hired by Bruce Wayne to find a experimental drug stolen from Wayne Enterprises. In the end with the help of a reformed Harley Quinn he gets the drug back and returns it to the rightful owners.

In a run in with Mary Marvel he describes to her how he is reformed, the two then join forces against Clayface, where Edward gets to see up front how twisted and cruel she has become with a great power. He suggests that she gets a mentor or some anger management.

Even Nightwing hired him to find out who was behind recent string of museum robberies. Whom he later saves from gang warfare while investigating Penguins involvement in organized crime. He later deduces that Nightwing is Dick Grayson.

Powers and Abilities Powers None known.

Abilities Genius-Level Intelligence: Supreme problem-solver, criminal mastermind. He is a genius with brilliant deductive power. His mind excels with puzzles, minds games, and manipulations.

Expert Detective: he possesses great deductive skills and analytic ability.
Independently Wealthy: Riddler has a vast fortune that he has acquired over years of crime as well as legally.

Strength level The Riddler possesses the strength level of a man his age, size and weight who engages in minimal regular exercise. On one occasion however, the Riddler was injected with a dosage of Venom, which imbued him with super-human strength for a short period of time.

Weaknesses Those akin to an average human being.

Compulsively Honest: His inability to hide his true intentions and/or motives.

Obsessive Compulsion: Riddles (formerly): His riddles are in fact a bizarre obsessive compulsion; his attempts to stop himself from sending them has met with failure time and time again. This extends to the fact he cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, but prefers to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the hero cannot escape. However, of Batman's themed enemies, Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle.

Paraphernalia Equipment: The Riddler has used a variety of gadgets throughout his career, the most notorious of which is a cane with a question mark-shaped brass handle.
Transportation:
None, but he has sometimes appeared with a car with question marks decorating the side of it.
Weapons:
Traditionally, the Riddler does not maintain an arsenal of weaponry, however he has been known to utilize gimmick-based items from time to time. Such items would include exploding jigsaw puzzle pieces and crossword puzzle throwing nets.

Notes The Riddler, unlike many of the other members of Batman's rogues gallery, is more of a cerebral than physical villain. Although he is quite suited for physical combat and often has weapons ready for use, he has probably always been among the least homicidal of the major Bat nemesis; indeed, he once lamented the rise of murderous villains ("What's happened to us? The Joker's killing people, for Christ's sake!").
Many adaptations of the Batman mythos have given the Riddler the real name Edward Nigma (or Nygma) or E. Nigma. Occasionally his full name has been given as Edward E. Nigma. Some have depicted this as a false name and his real name as Edward Nashton.
In the French and Quebecois translations of various Batman titles, his nom de plume has been translated to Le Sphinx, as in the riddle-posing monster of Greek mythology that Oedipus confronted.
In Mexico and Latin America, the Riddler is known as El Acertijo, which literally means "The Riddle". In Brazil, the character is named Charada, which also means "Riddle".
Although not physically disfigured, like most Batman villains, the Riddler has become darker in recent years. Whereas he was once portrayed as a playful trickster, he is now the victim of an intense obsessive compulsion. This was perhaps best shown in a 1999 issue of Gotham Adventures, in which he tried to refrain from leaving a riddle, but failed: "You don't understand... I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I... I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I... I might actually be crazy."
Trivia The Riddler is one of the few rogues that has deduced the true identity of the Batman. However, there is no major concern that the Riddler will leak the information. As Batman explains: "What good is a riddle which everyone knows the answer to?" playing with the Riddler's obsession with riddles and the greatest riddle of all: "Who is Batman?"
He often has two female assistants that help him, usually named a combination of Quiz, Query or Echo.
The Riddler has a counterpart in the Antimatter Universe called the Quizmaster who is a member of Lex Luthor's Justice Underground.
In an episode of the BBC television series Wire in the Blood entitled "Torment", psychologist profiler Tony Hill explains at length the Riddler's obsessive/compulsive nature to a young boy.
The Riddler is one of the Batman's few foes who has actually managed to discover his secret identity. Others include Professor Hugo Strange, Ra's al Ghul and Catwoman (although Batman willingly revealed his secret identity to Selina).
The Riddler's online screenname is "Wizard101."
Appearances in Other Media Live Action Batman (1966 TV Series) Frank Gorshin played the Riddler in the 1960s Batman television series and spin-off movie, with John Astin substituting once on the series. The popular television series was inspired by the first Silver Age appearance of the Riddler, with the premiere episode being an adaptation of this issue (Batman #171). Before the television series, the character was a minor villain with only three appearances in two decades, but the exposure of the series - especially with Gorshin's extremely popular interpretation - elevated the character in the comics to a major enemy. Gorshin also portrayed the Riddler in Legends of the Superheroes in 1979.

Batman Forever (Movie) Jim Carrey played the role in the 1996 movie directed by Joel Schumacher. Playing the character very close to Frank Gorshin's interpretation, Carrey presented Edward Nygma as an scientist obsessed with Bruce Wayne whose fragile mind cracks under his idol's rejection. When Wayne shuts down his plans for a brain altering device Edward calls "the Box," Nygma spirals into a stalking mentality, leaving riddles for Bruce at his home while slowly transforming himself into a cracked reflection of Bruce. Grasping onto fellow psychotic Two-Face, Nygma draws inspiration for his new identity from a fortune telling machine dressed in the Riddler's classic question marks. After convincing Two-Face to join him in a partnership, the pair ravage Gotham on a crime spree, with Batman unable to stop them. Eventually using "the Box" (which has become the most popular TV accessory ever and feeds Nygma people's throughts and knowledge), the Riddler discovers Batman's identity of Bruce Wayne and kidnaps Wayne's love interest, Dr. Chase Meridian. Once Batman and his new partner Robin deduce the Riddler's identity, the Duo race to Nygma's factory on Claw Island, where Edward tests Batman to see what is more dominant in him, the hero or the man. Once defeated from an overload of thoughts from "the Box," Riddler is brought to Arkham where he now believes himself to be Batman. His costume is seen later in Batman and Robin.

Cartoons Batman (1992 TV Series) In the popular 1990's TV series, the Riddler began as Edward Nygma, a game designer fired for wanting royalties on a popular game. In revenge, Riddler kidnapped his corrupt boss, forcing Batman and Robin through a giant labyrinth to save him. This first appearance does show Batman bringing Riddler to justice, however as Nygma's antics instilled his boss with a deep seeded paranoia, Batman reasoned Edward had won. A later episode shows the Riddler supposedly going straight, only to venture back to crime. His later appearances in The New Batman Adventures became spares after this, as the character was given to highly complex or campy storylines. In all appearances, Riddler was voiced by John Glover.

Batman (2004 TV Series)

The Riddler from the animated series entitled "The Batman"

In the Riddlers latest incarnation, he appears to have gone through a drastic overhall. He is portrayed with long black hair and wears a green body catsuit with a black question mark on the front of the suit. He appears to also wear shoulder pads and either has a tattoo of a line going down his arm, ending in a question mark on his hand, though this could be part of the costume. The one thing that hasn't changed is the mask, he still wears the green eye mask he has been portrayed with before, though this one actually covers his eyes with a white material. What is also new is the gothic like green lipstick that continues down to his chin. This modern and younger Riddler was made to look more gothic so that he fitted into the modern world where many categories of people exit. His cane appears to be more showing with a bubble on the end supporting a sharp question mark symbol.

This alternate Riddler has the same obsession for Riddles that his normal counterparts do, he cannot help but "tell the truth through riddles". His first encounter with the Bat was when he was a scientist designing a unique helmet, it was sabotaged and he attempted to kill the person he believed sabotaged it, Batman prevented this, Nigma then taking on the Persona of "The Riddler". The bats first encounter in the episode "Riddled" involved the Bat and Detective Ellen Yin defusing "bombs" placed all over the city by him, in the end this appeared to be a diversion, mearly geletin desert in containers, the clues the riddles left led to the real crime that was being committed, the Riddler was immediately stopped by both. In all his appearances, the Riddler was voiced by Robert Englund.

Three lives have I:
So gentle I sooth the skin
So light I caress the sky
So hard I crack rock
What am I?

Until I am measured
I am not known,
Yet how you miss me
When I have flown
What am I?

If you break me, I do not stop working
If you touch me I may be snared
If you lose me nothing will matter
What am I?

Left and right,
And in the middle
But I still hold water
What am I?

No legs to be seen
I possess no heat,
Yet I do have steam
I have no voice
To let words out,
But from far away
You can still hear me shout.
What am I?

As light as a feather
But you couldn’t hold it for 10 minutes
What am I?

That I only point
Yet I guide men
all over the earth
